Gomiščkovo Shelter on Krn

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The small refuge with rudimentary management is a good place to take a break after visiting the summit. It's just a few minutes below the summit and the view is phenomenal when the weather is good. The official name of the hut is “Gomišckovo zavetišce na Krnu”.

Krn Peak

Highlight • Summit

Krn is the highest peak of the Krn Mountains, which stretches between the valleys of the Soča, Lepenjica and Tolminka; is the extreme southwestern group of the Eastern Julian Alps. Krn is a huge nose-like peak, which due to its location on the edge of the high mountains is visible from most peaks of the Julian Alps and other mountains. The most beautiful view of it is from the Soča Valley near Kobarid, where it falls in mighty walls. The relative height between the Soča Valley and the top is as much as 2000 m, so it looks very high from this side. Krn consists of Dachstein limestones, and the surrounding plateaus are younger reddish limestones and marls. There are extensive mountain pastures on the southwestern slopes; at an altitude of 400 to 800 m, they stretch across the slope of a plateau suitable for farming and terraces, where the mountain villages of Drežnica, Drežniške Ravne, Magozd, Vrsno and Krn stand. Typical alpine flora grows on Krn, as well as rare protected flowers of silver butterbur, pink-red rainforest, July alpine poppy and favrat sagebrush.

Krn has a rich history from the First World War, reminiscent of forts, tunnels, trenches, crumbling military buildings and numerous remains of weapons and military equipment, as well as mulattoes built to supply the front. Krn and other peaks of the Krn Mountains were the scene of the worst battles between the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies. These fights are clearly shown in the Kobarid Museum.

Krn is one of the most scenic peaks in the Julian Alps. The view extends to the Karavanke and Kamnik Alps in the east, Snežnik, Nanos and Slavnik in the southeast, the Adriatic Sea in the south, the Friuli lowlands in the southwest, the Dolomites in the west, the High Tours in the northwest, to the Julian peaks in the north. Especially beautiful is the view of the Soča valley and the nearby peaks Batognica, Rdeči rob in the east, in the south and west to the north Sveta gora, Kolovrat, Matajur, (Kobariški) Stol, Kanin mountains, Montaž, Viš, Mangrt, Bavški Grintovec, Jalovec , Mojstrovka, Prisojnik, Razor, Kanjavec and Triglav.

Krn (2,244 m)

Highlight • Summit

One of the highest peaks in Slovenia, the fantastic view rewards the climb. As there is no shade on the path, caution is advised on very sunny and hot days. After rain, the path over meadows and stones can be slippery.

Silva Koren Via Ferrata

Highlight • Climb

Beautiful, easy via ferrata on the Krn. But don't underestimate it, the KS is very long and not as well secured as you are used to from D, CH or A, for example.
