Obernberger See

Highlight • Lake

A report dated August 27, 2016:

One of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Tyrol is probably the Obernberger See in the valley of the same name. An idyll beyond compare. And a dispute has arisen about this beautiful turquoise-colored mountain lake, which has probably occupied the Tyrolean state government and the population of the valley for years.

inn or hotel
The Gasthof am See has been abandoned at the beginning of the lake for a good 10 years and is slowly rotting away. On nice days, this inn was literally overrun by hikers. One day this welcoming inn was barricaded and closed. The meaning of this procedure eludes my understanding. A thriving inn was willfully closed.
Why. The owner (?) wanted to build a hotel complex on this site. A completely pointless plan. The forest road would have to be expanded and then the peace would be gone.

With a few refurbishments this inn would be perfectly fine again. Maybe a new toilet. On the bus, a farmer's wife from Obernberg told me about the dreary financial situation of the owner and about Russian oligarchs who absolutely want to build a hotel here, half-sunk into the ground like a container. In my opinion, this is a highly dangerous undertaking, since blasting can very easily damage the lake, which has underground inflows and outflows, to such an extent that the turquoise-green waters of the lake disappear forever.

In favorable lighting conditions, from this point on the shore of Lake Obernberg, opposite the Maria am See chapel, you can admire the reflection of the peaks of the Kleiner and Obernberger Tribulaun in the crystal-clear waters of the lake.

Lake Obernberg

Highlight • Lake

Lake in a fantastic location, which is popular with holidaymakers and locals in summer, on vacation and on weekends. If you want it quieter, you go there during the week. Important: Do not forget Vespers, as there are no places to stop at the lake!

Sandjöchl Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The ascent to the Sandjöchle is technically not difficult. The right footwear is a must. From the top you have a good view of the Italian side and of the valley to Lake Obernberg.
