Upper Leśniewo Lock

Highlight • Monument

The lock in Leśniewo is one of as many as 10 locks that were to be built on the Masurian Canal, a huge undertaking of the Prussian state at the time. In total, there were to be 5 of them in the territory of today's Poland, and the lock in Leśniewo was the first on the canal from the side of Lake Mamry.

The size of the lock itself is truly impressive - 46 meters long, 7.5 meters wide and with a 17-meter drop. To this day, a clearly visible groove for the Nazi eagle can be seen on the front wall of the lock. This is a rare case of preserving such a hated symbol in Poland. It survived only because it is only a niche for the emblem of the Third Reich.

Today, however, the monumental and mysterious lock in Leśniewo Górne is treated mainly as a monument associated with the Masurian Canal. And as a result, it has also become one of the fascinating attractions of Masuria and the area around Lake Mamry. The extreme rope park that operates here in the summer attracts many adrenaline-hungry daredevils every year. plannawypad.pl/sluza-w-lesniewie

This bridge is on the Kętrzyn–Węgorzewo railway line, which was launched on 1 July 1907 on a section of 33.3 km. The construction of most of the accompanying railway infrastructure and buildings should be associated with this period. The railway line is entered in the register of historical monuments.

The importance of the line increased in the years 1911–1914, when construction of the Masurian Canal began. During this period, a railway bridge was built over the canal. During World War I, the Kętrzyn–Węgorzewo line was not destroyed, with the exception of the Węgorzewo station, where the bridge over Węgorapa was destroyed. The route was expanded in the years 1917–1918.
Another increase in the importance of the route was associated with the construction of Hitler's headquarters in Gierłoż in 1940–1941 and the so-called side quarters, i.e. the army quarters in Mamerki and the field quarters of the head of the Reich Chancellery near the town of Radzieje. There were also shelters of the command post near the town of Przystań along the tracks. The location of the route near the bunkers increases its tourist attractiveness.

After World War II, the railway tracks on the Węgorzewo - Kętrzyn route were dismantled on the orders of the Soviet army. In the following years, the line was rebuilt. In 1975-1976, the surface was replaced along the entire route, with concrete sleepers and rails being laid. On May 30, 1992, the last scheduled passenger train departed from Węgorzewo to Kętrzyn. In 2000, freight train traffic was also suspended on the route. Currently, occasional journeys take place here.

Masurian Canal

Highlight • River

The first construction projects date back to 1862/1864. They were modified several times.
The purpose of the construction was to drain water from the Great Masurian Lakes to the Pregolya River in a northerly direction in order to obtain a waterway to the Baltic Sea, and to use water energy to move water power plants and drain about 17 thousand hectares of meadows. Later, the energy function of the canal was abandoned and it was planned to be used only as a waterway for transporting timber, building materials, peat and tourism. Some people speculate that the Masurian Canal was to serve as a waterway for U-boat submarines, and a repair base for these units was planned to be built in Masuria. However, these assumptions are contradicted by the dimensions of the locks, which are 45 x 7.5 m and a depth of about 2 m.
According to the last project, ten water stages with drops from 5 to 17 m were planned. The construction of the canal began in 1911, but the outbreak of war in 1914 interrupted the work, and it was not resumed until 1934. During the Third Reich, the canal was a secret facility. Topographic maps from 1939 did not indicate any locks or other water structures. Construction was finally stopped in 1942 and never resumed. When construction work was stopped, the entire canal was filled with water. After the war, when the Red Army entered East Prussia, the surviving equipment was looted and taken away. The devastation was completed by settlers.

The Giant Bunker in Mamerki

Highlight • Historical Site

Mamerki
Headquarters of the Supreme Command of Land Forces (OKH) "Anna"
Headquarters of the Supreme Command of Land Forces (OKH)
and the Land Forces Quartermaster "Anna"
it is located 18 km north of Gierłoż, on a side road from Kętrzyn to Węgorzewo. The quarters were built in the fall of 1940. It was constantly modernized and expanded until the fall of 1944.
The complex consisted of over 150 buildings, including 29 reinforced concrete air-raid shelters and covering technical infrastructure.
The area was divided into three zones:
In Zone I "Quelle" there were shelters and OKH buildings.
In Zone II "Fritz" there were bunkers and buildings of the Land Forces Quartermaster and a railway station.
In Zone III "Brigitte Stadt" there were shelters and buildings for communication and auxiliary services.
Bunkers V2 (2 internal rooms) and K5 (5 internal rooms), built in the first period of construction, had external walls and ceilings 2m thick.
After increasing the air risk to the headquarters, in the spring of 1944, the strengthening of the building began. The existing shelters started to be covered with a layer of reinforced concrete with a total thickness of 4-6 m (shelters after reconstruction VO2 and KO5).
