St. Laurentius Church, Liebenau

Highlight • Religious Site

The Church of St. Lawrence is located on a hill on the edge of the old spot. Originally it was called "Church of Bruchdorf". Bruchdorf was a farming village on the right side of the Aue, which was later united with the Liebenau area on the left bank of the Aue. Already around 900 there was a - presumably wooden - church. Whether it was this wooden building or a later church is uncertain, in any case the old church was destroyed in the war in the early 16th century. The current church, built in the late Gothic style, has a stone in the lintel with the date 1522. It contains two special art-historical treasures: Firstly, a richly decorated, six and a half meter high tabernacle (sacrament house) from the year 1510; on the other hand, a carved altar from 1517. The tower dates from the 19th century; the original fell victim to a lightning strike. The church was consecrated to Saint Laurentius in Catholic times. This martyr was frequently elected patron of a church in the 9th and 10th centuries. Laurentius died in Rome in 258 on red-hot iron rods because he held on to his Christian faith. The reference to the saint was preserved even after the Reformation (mid-16th century); probably because Lawrence was the patron saint of blacksmiths. Until the 19th century, Liebenau was famous for its high-quality scythe production.

Highest elevation in the Eickhofer Heide (85 m). Tower and benches created and maintained by the Heimatverein Steyerberg. Distant view due to the meanwhile all around higher grown trees only in one direction möglich.Dennoch a good intermediate goal and suitable for a pause.
