The Sopeter Statue

Highlight • Monument

Statue by sculptor (and former mayor of Erpe-Mere) Herman De Somer (1923-2008), who died two months after the statue was placed.

"De sopeters" was the nickname of the people of Vlekkem.

Sop was soaked bread, poured over with milk and brought to the farmers in the field by children or farmers' wives.

Erondegem Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The first mention of a church in Erondegem dates back to 1142. The right of patronage had been vested in the St. Adrian Abbey in Geraardsbergen since 1106.

The current church has a 14th-century Gothic choir and a 16th-century crossing tower. The nave was built in 1848-1849.
The oriented church has a brick three-aisled nave. The flat-ended choir and the crossing tower were made of sandstone. The tower has a high constricted spire.
The choir is covered by a barrel vault from 1739. The main altar is from the 18th century, with a 17th-century tabernacle. The southern side altar is from 1750, as evidenced by a chronogram, and is dedicated to St. Hubertus. A choir stall and a confessional are 18th century and the pulpit is 19th century. The baptismal font is from the 17th century. There is a relic of Saint Hubert and a 17th century painting depicts the Conversion of Hubert.

Saint Denis Church

Highlight • Religious Site

With the Marian Year (1954: 3rd part of the "Messages of Mary") a Lourdes cave was built.
The city council gave its permission to build the cave on the grounds of the presbytery. For the construction of the cave, 25,000 kg of rock was brought from Spontin to Impe.
On October 24, 1954, the cave was opened by E.H. D'Hollander, Dean of Wetteren, consecrated.
