Chapel of Our Lady of the Fever and Franciscan Friary

Highlight • Religious Site

A devotional chapel belonging to the St. Michael parish, built between 1641 and 1705 on the current corner of Frederik Lintsstraat, on the site of two older chapels. In 1798, the French sold it publicly to chapel master J. Van Hamme and, from 1814 onward, it served as a parish church. When the Friars Minor purchased the church in 1865, they had a walled monastery built adjacent to it, with a spacious garden on the eastern side featuring vegetable plots, dwarf fruit trees, and greenhouses.

The chapel was first restored in 1878 under the direction of architect P.P. Stoop, when the stained-glass windows, designed by P. Vander Auderaa and crafted in the workshop of Stalins and Janssens, were also installed. In 1889, the church was given a new choir. During a second restoration in 1907, the facade was stripped of plaster. In 1986, the Catholic University of Leuven purchased the church and the former monastery, which, after renovations, were repurposed as the Catholic Documentation and Research Centre.

KU Leuven University Library

Highlight • Monument

Leuven's university library, burned down by the Germans in World War I, was rebuilt as a war memorial in 1928 thanks to donations from numerous high schools and colleges, most of them from the USA.

Check out the inviting reading room - made of wood from the floor to the shelves. In the nearby 73.5-meter-high bell tower hang 63 bells with a total weight of 35 tons. Are you fit? Then climb the almost 300 steps to the top to enjoy the great view of the city.

In the square in front: a work of art by Jan Fabre.

The Kotmadam statue

Highlight • Monument

The eye-catcher on the Oude Markt in Leuven is without doubt the life-size bronze sculpture 'De Kotmadam'. The statue was inaugurated in 1985 in the presence of the then oldest kotmadam of the student city, Maria Swerts, who is also the godmother of the statue. The Kotmadam is a young attractive lady, an image that according to some does not correspond to the real kotmadams, rather older and slender. For some time now, actress Katrien De Vos, who plays in the VTM series De Kotmadam, also visited the statue in the presence of many students and prominent figures from Leuven. The statue, a work by Fred Bellefroid, has become very popular in the meantime.

KU Leuven Main Building

Highlight • Monument

This is the Baroque so-called Rega Wing, dating from 1723, of the University Hall. Until 1914 (and its subsequent destruction), the university library was also located here.

Anyone who wants to enter the University Hall itself will likely know that the entrance to this former cloth hall is on the other side (Naamsestraat). Since you're here, you might want to take a closer look at this Rega Wing—and note the list of names of "victims of the old market" on the 1924 memorial on the facade. Where parties and drinking have been going on for decades, in 1914 it was nothing but destruction and devastation. Cheers!

Saint Michael's Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The church was built between 1650 and 1666 in white sand and ironstone. The facade, with Ionic columns, pilasters and frieze, has the appearance of an altar.

The church was almost completely destroyed in 1944. Only the facade was miraculously spared. The reconstruction of the church was finished in 1950.

Since May 2021, the church has been home to a historically substantiated reconstruction of the Baroque organ that Heinrich Andreas Contius built in 1769 for the Church of the Holy Trinity in Liepaja (Latvia). H.A. Contius was highly regarded as an organ builder by Johann Sebastian Bach, and the organ in Liepaja is the only complete organ of Contius that has come down to us.

It is therefore no exaggeration to say that the reconstruction of this organ creates a unique framework in which the music of J.S. Bach, sons and contemporaries, can be performed in the best conditions.
