Wildenburg Observation Tower

The Wildenburg Castle ruins are situated at approximately 630 meters above sea level on the Wildenburger Kopf hill overlooking the Idarbach valley. It was the highest castle in the Hunsrück region.

Only a few remnants of the upper castle, perched atop a rocky outcrop, remain. A 22-meter-high observation tower was built on the summit of the rock, starting in 1980 and completed in 1981. From its 15-meter-high viewing platform, which is arranged in a ring around the tower, it offers excellent panoramic views. Orientation panels on the parapet explain the points of interest.

The spiral staircase and the covered viewing platform are constructed of concrete and are very stable, therefore there is little risk of vertigo.

One side of the access path leads a few meters over loose rocks of the Rosselhalde Mörschieder Burr. You have to be careful here, as the Wacker wobbles and you slip quickly without sturdy shoes. Alternatively, go back to the rock path on the western approach.

❄️ Right at the beginning, a small waterfall – between moss and rock, slightly frozen, truly beautiful.
🌨️ The snow lay like powdered sugar on the paths, branches, and stones – tranquil, almost magical.
🌥️ It was cloudy, cold, and dry – just right for this quiet forest walk with a view.

addendum. For this tour I parked at the sports field in Mörschied and then walked over the Rosselhalde to the Hohenfels where you have a good view. In the further course then comes the Wildenburg where you should definitely climb the tower. The Felsenweg to the Mörschieder Burr with a nice place to rest. The view is excellent again.
