Schutsluis Keulse Vaart

A "schutsluis" is the most well-known version of a lock with a lock keeper's house. The lock and the original bridge were built in 1564 in the "Cologne Canal" (ship route between Amsterdam and Cologne) and rebuilt between 1817 and 1823. It was restored again in 1928. The current bridge previously stood on the site of the Zwaantjesbrug.
A lock allows ships to move from one water level to another. A ship can be raised or lowered with it. Passage through locks is regulated, for example, by lights attached to the lock.
