IJssellinie Gun Turret (Cold War)

Highlight • Historical Site

In Arnhem, many remains of the IJssellinie can still be found.

Here on the Klingelbeekseweg, you can see a gun turret from the 1950s.

Historical context: Flooding land to stop an enemy advance is something we have been doing in the Netherlands for centuries. The Waterlinie from the Golden Age is the best-known example of this. The idea of flooding land was resurrected during the Cold War. For example, the IJssellinie was constructed after the Second World War.

The idea of the IJssellinie was to flood an area from Nijmegen to Kampen in the event of an attack by the Warsaw Pact in order to stop the enemy advance. A strip of water almost 200 kilometres long and 10 kilometres wide had to protect the west of the Netherlands from the advancing communists.

By sinking caissons in the Waal near Nijmegen, on the IJssel near Olst and near Meinerswijk on the Neder-Rijn, the entire IJssel valley would be flooded. An ingenious system of overflows and dikes had to ensure that the water level was too high to wade through, but too low for boats.
