Stork nesting pole at Webbekoms Broek

Highlight • Structure

At the end of July 2016, the Agency for Nature and Forests, in collaboration with the Webbekoms Broek Visitor Centre, already placed a stork's nest in Diest at the visitor centre. Since 2018, the nest has been occupied by a pair of storks and in 2022 there was also a brood. Additional poles were placed, including near the second viewing platform that was added in recent years as part of waterworks with the valve weir between the Demer and Zwarte Beek. That pole is approximately here, a sign about the project can be found on the path opposite the viewpoint. There was also a pair of storks in the Webbekoms Broek in 2023 and 2024. Incidentally, 10 additional stork poles were placed in the Demer and Laak valleys in 2023. In addition to an additional one in Diest (this one in the Webbekoms broek), there were also in Aarschot, Scherpenheuvel-Zichem, Rotselaar and Tremelo. More info on rlnh.be/nieuws/10-nieuwe-ooievaarsnesten-in-demer-en-laakvallei A stork came quite quickly to build a nest on the pole at the Maagdentoren in Zichem.

Diesters Broek Viewing Platform

Highlight • Viewpoint

This viewing platform - which you can also use as a shelter in case of unexpectedly bad weather - offers a view of the Diesters Broek, nature towards Zelem (with the Rotbroek), the path to Webbekom and the Webbekoms Broek and last but not least the Demer and the Zwart Water. It is located near the bridge over the Demer on the two paths to Diest and the path to Webbekom and also provides an excellent overview of the infrastructure that has been built here in the context of waterworks with the valve weir between the Demer and Zwarte Beek. You can see the fish swimming upstream there on sunnier days. Of course, the viewing platform - provided the necessary equipment - is also a good place for those who want to observe birds and other animals. Further on the path to Webbekom you will find an identical viewing platform.

Working on the wetlands at time of visit, some parts closed. Beautiful like all "pants" in this region.

Rotbroek

Highlight • Forest

Information board about the Rotbroek that you enter here. A little further, near the Demer, you will find a second sign. The Rotbroek was always a floodplain with thick layers of peat until desiccation hit. There is still seepage and slope peat and efforts are being made to reduce desiccation. Rotbroek is part of the Webbekomsbroek-Borchbeemden nature reserve. You will also find a bench seat here and can walk to the Demer and other "pants".

rest area Eksterhoek

Highlight • Rest Area

You will find a nice picnic spot in the middle of a newly planted forest. The picnic table is in a semicircle marked with iron sandstones. You can read more about the Eksterhoek nature reserve on the information board.

Webbekoms Broek Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

Webbekom, a sub-municipality of Diest, belonged to the abbey of Sint-Truiden at an early stage, together with Zelem, Schaffen, Linkhout, Donk and Halen. The parish of Webbekom was founded around 800, and also included the "kapellanie" Assent until the end of the 18th century. The village was destroyed in 1507 during the Guelders Wars, the church also partially. During the unrest of the 16th century and especially in 1578, the church was again ravaged. In 1606 it was reconsecrated. North-east of the village centre lies the nature reserve Webbekoms Broek. It is a large nature reserve where wetlands and pools are omnipresent and you will find many water birds. There is still a lot of nature and water works being done with, among other things, additional wetlands. The area is easily accessible via Diest, where you will also find a visitors centre, but of course you can also enter here. At this location you will find an information board with the various routes and the nature reserve itself. Provide sturdy footwear in or after wetter weather if you want to walk further than the cobblestone path that you will find here.

The photos that I placed are partly of the center of Webbekom and partly of the area around the path and start in the swamp near the center and the road to the nature reserve (and the direct surroundings).

Linden Mill, Diest

Highlight • Monument

The mill was built in 1742 and originally stood in Schaffen, on the Doodsberg. In 1887 he moved to the Mierenberg in Assent. The mill was in operation until 1953. Six years later, the city bought it and it was rebuilt on the city walls. Today the mill belongs to the heritage of the Provincial Domain Halve Maan, which manages the monument in collaboration with 'Living Mills' and keeps it in good working order.
The Lindenmolen is a unique example because of its windmill case, one of the largest in Flanders. It is a stake or standard mill, so named after the large trunk (stake or standard) from which the entire mill case hangs. The trunk also serves as a pivot to turn the mill to the wind (turning). This is done with a kind of pulley on which a chain can be wound. Around the mill are twelve stones to which the chain can be attached, the creepers
