Milano Centrale Railway Station

Highlight • Monument

Milano Centrale Station / Stazione di Milano Centrale, was officially inaugurated in 1931.
King Vittorio Emanuele III laid the foundation stone for the station as early as 1906, although at that time there weren't even any construction plans for the building. Initial construction began in 1913, but progress was slow. The Great Depression had Italy firmly in its grip, and austerity measures were needed.
Milano Centrale, or Stazione di Milano Centrale, is one of the most important railway stations in Europe. The terminal station was inaugurated in 1931 after almost 20 years of construction.
Initially, the building was intended to be very simple, but Mussolini decided that this structure should represent the strength of the Fascist empire and had all plans changed. The new design was stylistically inspired by Roman monumental buildings.
Additional platforms were incorporated into the plans, and a steel platform hall was planned. It was intended to be 341 meters long and span an area of over 66,000 square meters. The structure was inaugurated in 1931 and still stands in all its glory today.

Milan tram

Highlight • Monument

This is one of the oldest examples of public transport in the world, as Milan simultaneously preserves several means of transport, including old trams that still work and date back to the 19th century.

Piazza del Duomo, Milan

Highlight • Historical Site

Large, busy square directly in front of the Milan Cathedral. You should definitely watch your bags here though...

The Cathedral Square has existed since the 14th century. However, it was much smaller. Neighbouring buildings were gradually demolished and it finally took on its current appearance at the end of the 19th century, when the adjacent Galleria was built.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Highlight • Monument

Right next to the Duomo of Milan stands one of the most popular places in the city, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a covered passage between the Duomo and the Teatro alla Scala, designed by the architect Giuseppe Mengoni and inaugurated in the 1860s.

This arcaded street which serves as a showcase and a walk to have an aperitif or dine after the Opera is the oldest shopping center in Italy, decorated with mosaics, caryatids, decorations that surround windows and balconies. Inside there are the shops of the most luxurious brands, but also historic restaurants and starred chefs.

In the center of the Gallery, on the mosaic floor, a bull is represented. There is a superstitious rite, which consists of turning the bull's testicles three times with the heel of the right foot to guarantee fertility or a return to Milan, or good luck for the new year.

According to legend, if you roll your heel three times on the testicles of the Turin bull, you'll become pregnant, rich, or return to Milan the following year.
Who's trying it?
