Celtic Wagon Grave of Püttlingen

The first excavations in Herchenbach took place around 1900, and archaeologists got to work intensively in the 1980s. Five burial mounds with up to ten burial sites were explored. Underneath is a large chariot grave, which indicates that it was an important person, perhaps a tribal prince. The reconstruction of the grave in a trimmed hill can be seen on the historic Püttlinger hiking trail.

The largest honorary cemetery in Saarland. 2,460 dead rest here, including 1,510 fallen German soldiers and civilian war victims. 950 war dead come from other nations. They were mostly forced laborers and prisoners of war.

The cemetery lies within a former chain of bunkers of what was then the West Wall. Three large stone crosses stand on a blown up bunker at the back of the complex.
