Inner Harbor Hamburg

Highlight • River

The jetties should visit every Hamburg explorer. Take a tour of the harbor from here, enjoy a city tour, or just relax, eat a Matjesbrötchen and enjoy a pot of coffee. Great location!

The river boatmen's church offers a maritime-themed service twice a month in the former hold of the ship. It is financed primarily through donations and collections and is a nice change from the norm. The small barge next door is a kind of taxi, which picks up sailors for the service and then takes them back to their ship.

View of the Elbphilharmonie

Highlight • Viewpoint

Very beautiful landmark. Concerts are always booked out well in advance, but you can sometimes visit them for free and enjoy the view over the harbor from here.

Jan-Fedder Promenade

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Jan Fedder Promenade in Hamburg is a flood protection wall on the Elbe that has been converted into a promenade. It runs between the Landungsbrücken and Baumwall train stations parallel to the streets Johannisbollwerk, Vorstellen and Baumwall. It was built after the storm surge in 1962, redesigned between 2010 and 2019 and has had its current name since January 2022. It is reminiscent of the Hamburg popular actor Jan Fedder, who also achieved national fame in his role as police inspector Dirk Matthies in the television series Großstadtrevier. Until 1962, the quay edge between Landungsbrücken and Baumwall was still at street level; before the Second World War, cargo ships were also loaded and unloaded here in Niederhafen. After the most devastating storm surge to date flooded large parts of the city center and caused over 300 deaths throughout the city, goods handling was finally stopped here and the first flood protection wall was built to protect the city center from future floods. It was also designed as a promenade and was raised in several steps to a height of 7.20 meters above sea level.

From 2010 to 2019, the structure was increased again (now to 8.90 m) and redesigned based on a design by the Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid (1950–2016). Bright, round, curved stairs made of reinforced concrete lead to the street and the water side. The lamps are designed based on ship masts. Emergency ladders for climbing out of the Elbe are installed every 40 meters.

Niederhafen Promenade

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the Baumwall to the Landungsbrücken the Hafenmeile runs. Always a magnet for those who want to get a taste of the harbor atmosphere and overseas. In addition to the views, the gastronomic possibilities, the ferry boats offer a trip to the other shore at the jetties. This allows for other new perspectives.

Maiden's Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Jungfernbrücke is a listed pedestrian bridge that spans the Zollkanal. It was built in 1887 as a pedestrian bridge and has a half-timbered arch that is cut in the middle by the road surface. The Jungfernbrücke connects the street Katharinenkirchhof with the Brooksinsel as part of the Speicherstadt. The street leading to the canal was then still called Kleiner Jungfernstieg, from which the bridge owes its name. Hundreds of love locks are evidence of the corresponding number of marriage vows.
