Schöhsee

Highlight • Lake

The Schöhsee is located in the middle of Plön's urban area, nestled between the Trammer See, the Behler See and the Großer Plöner See. It is 78 hectares in size and has a maximum depth of 29.3 m. Due to the lake's low nutrient content and the resulting low algae growth, it is one of the clearest lakes in Schleswig-Holstein. In the summer months, visibility can reach up to 3.5 meters. There are three wooded islands on the lake, called the Kleiner Warder, Mittlerer Warder and Großer Warder. During the winter months, the lake is home to up to 2000 tufted ducks, as well as other bird species. It is also a breeding ground for great crested grebes, kingfishers, oystercatchers and many other water bird species. The Schöhsee can easily be walked around on a designated hiking trail. The circular trail with a great view of the lake is around 5.4 km long and is therefore also suitable for families and beginners.

Plön Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

Plön's Town Hall is centrally located on the Schlossberg hill.

The current town hall was built between 1816 and 1818 on the old market square according to plans by the renowned architect Christian Frederik Hansen. Previously, a 13th-century town hall building stood on this site, which the last Duke of Plön, Duke Friedrich Carl, had demolished and replaced with a new one in 1746.

The Goose Girl Fountain, made of shell limestone by Bernhard Butzke, dates from 1922. The Goose Girl is one of Plön's landmarks and was a gift to their hometown by the Müller brothers, who had become wealthy abroad.

View of Lake Plön (Großer Plöner See)

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

At 28 square kilometers, Lake Plön is the largest lake in Schleswig-Holstein and the tenth largest lake in Germany. The river Schwentine flows through it. This waterway connects it to the other lakes in the Holstein Lake District (the Kleiner and Großer Eutiner See, the Kellersee, the Kleiner Plöner See, the Diksee and the Ukleisee).

Excursion boats (5-lake trip) connect the towns of Plön, Malente-Gremsmühlen, Niederkleveez and Timmdorf.

View of Lake Plön

Highlight • Viewpoint

A very nice view over the lake. In certain weather conditions it can be very windy here. But still a great place to enjoy the view on a walk or a round trip by bike.

The Plön Water Tower is located in the east of the town of Plön on Scharweg. The water tower was built in 1913 according to plans by the Bremen engineer Carl Franke. Stylistically, it is classified as late Art Nouveau or Reform Architecture. After its closure in 1974, it was initially scheduled for demolition, but in 1977 it became one of the first industrial and technical monuments to be listed as a historical monument in Schleswig-Holstein.
