The Dionysostheater (Modern Greek: Θέατρο του Διονύσου) was the most important theater in ancient Greece and is considered the birthplace of the theater of ancient Greece and of drama in general. It is also considered to be the first theater in the world. It is located on the southern slope of the Athens Acropolis. It got its name after Dionysus, the god of wine and ecstasy and madness. In his honor, the Dionysia Festival was celebrated every year in Athens. This included theater performances that originally emerged from cultic song, dance and sacrificial rites and took place in the Dionysus Theater.
