Hamburg Observatory

Highlight • Monument

Bergedorf has been home to the Hamburg Observatory since 1912. Originally it had been set up at the Stintfang on St. Pauli, but because of the heavy air pollution at the Port of Hamburg, it was soon relocated to the Gojenberg in Bergedorf: here the view was clearer.
In a large park, a whole ensemble of listed neo-baroque dome buildings, in which historic refractors and telescopes are distributed. Even today, the University of Hamburg is doing research here in the field of astrophysics and observing planets, stars and other celestial bodies. The Chair of History of Science and Technology is also represented here.
Visitors can not only look over Bergedorf on the grounds of the observatory, but also independently follow the planet path and look up.
Visitors can book guided tours of the individual refractors or take part in the Sunday tours through the visitor center in the Café Zeit und Raum.
Since 2008, the Hamburg Observatory has been one of the most recognized nationally important cultural monuments in Germany. An application for recognition as a World Heritage by UNESCO is provided.
