Downe Arms, Castleton

Highlight • Pub

Locally farmed produce, very reasonably priced Sunday Roast served with Yorkshire Puddings. Plus they sell Black Sheep Ale. It just doesn't get any better! Very pretty village.

Castleton Village

Highlight • Rest Area

The village of Castleton on the River Esk is a great base from which to explore the beautiful North York Moors National Park. It is the start point for the Esk Valley Walk long-distance trail, which ends in Whitby.

It has a station on the Esk Valley Line between Middlesborough and Whitby and is also host to a number of amenities. There's a small supermarket for stocking up on supplies and a couple of pubs that serve excellent food. The Downe Arms has bed and breakfast rooms and there are a few other private rental options in the village.

Young Ralph Cross

Highlight • Monument

Young Ralph Cross stands at the meeting point of two moorland roads, high on windswept Danby High Moor. It has become an emblem of the North York Moors National Park and is the centre of various old folk tales.

The 10-foot high (3 m) gritstone cross is of uncertain age, with some historians suggesting 11th-century origins. There was once a letter 'R' carved on its south face, though it is no longer visible today.

Fat Betty (White Cross)

Highlight • Monument

This stumpy, white-painted cross is known locally as Fat Betty. She's one of many moorland crosses and standing stones dotted about the North York Moors, including the nearby Young Ralph Cross, an emblem of the national park. Used as ancient waymarkers and believed to ward off evil spirits, the crosses were an important landmark for travellers in days gone by.

Fat Betty is a carved piece of roughly square shaped rock with a rounded head. Like nearby Young Ralph, the cross has folk tales associated with it.

Fat Betty Moorland Cross

Highlight • Monument

This cross is known as Fat Betty, one of several moorland crosses, used in the past as waymarkers.

It's a wonderful place with captivating views over the Rosedale Head moorland, which transforms into a striking carpet of purple in the spring and summer! The steep gradient makes it a challenge to cycle up here from Rosedale Abbey, but it's certainly worth the effort!

Danby High Moor

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

A minor road through the delightfully desolate, heathery and lonely Danby High Moor with distant views to Roseberry Topping to the west.

Yorkshire Cycle Hub

Highlight • Cycleway

Absolutely worth checking out as this place is quite amazing. There's everything one might need for an ace day (or week) out on the bikes, whether you're into road, gravel, mtb or touring. Really knowledgeable staff with a huge passion for spreading the love of cycling.

There's a cafe, bike shop, hire bikes, bike wash, drying room, camping pods and a modern, really clean bunk house for big groups. Seriously, worth a trip. Also set in a beautiful little valley called Fryup Dale which has such quiet, pretty (tough) roads for cycling.
