Che Guevara Mausoleum and Plaza de la Revolución, Santa Clara

Highlight • Monument

It was inaugurated on December 28, 1988, in commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of Che's Birth and the 30th of the Battle of Santa Clara. It is considered a well-achieved square in terms of the combination of the functional and the symbolic, and of the landscape and architectural scales. The Plaza is one of the free spaces in the city with capacity for 100,000 people, it has an integral terrazzo finish and its design symbolizes human figures in an attitude of concentration and union.

A total of 60 palms surround the entire area in memory of Che's 60th birthday and 14 palms on both sides that symbolize the day and year of his birth. At the end, two fountains evoke the meaning of the stars with their shape. The grandstand is made up of 5 elements that offer sobriety and strength to the Monumental Complex. On the pedestal, 16 m high, stands the bronze sculpture of Commander Ernesto "Che" Guevara, looking towards the South American cone and the Sierra del Escambray. The mural on its main face represents relief figures expressing images of transcendental moments and characters in the Cuban insurrectionary stage. The back shows the route of Column No. 2 “Antonio Maceo” and Column No. 8 “Ciro Redondo”.

The Memorial that keeps the remains of the guerrillas who fell together with Che in Bolivia since October 1997, is a complementary work, well incorporated into the initial set, in 1988.

This place has given it an exceptional relief, above all for its historical significance, well represented in the originality of its architectural expression. The architects Blanca Hernández Gibernau and Jorge Cao Campos have been the main protagonists of the entire complex in all stages of completion and execution. Both the volumetric conception of the sculptural ensemble, as well as all the sculptural work included, belong to the late sculptor José Delarra.

The Plaza and the monument complex have become the main place for carrying out political and political-cultural activities of a massive nature and for large groups in the city of Santa Clara, it is also the most visited site by national and international tourism in Santa Clara. our province.
