St. Mary's Church, Lastingham

Highlight • Settlement

A very lovely village with some serious history going back to the 7th century. At the site of the present St Mary's Church here, was founded by St Cedd of Lindisfarne as a Celtic monastery around AD654; the present church goes back to the times of the Normans.

The village is a great place to stop at on your tour. In need of food and drink? The Blacksmiths Arms will keep you well fed!

Victoria Cross Viewpoint

Highlight • Monument

This cross sits on a great viewpoint on this limestone escarpment, overlooking Lastingham. It's called Victoria Cross and was put here in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.

A bit off the road in Spaunton, but well worth making a stop for. The provision of a bench: always nice!

Hutton-le-Hole village

Highlight • River

Hutton-le-Hole is a beautiful village and is situated exactly where its name suggests, in a hole between the Tabular Hills and Spaunton Moor.

There are several cafes in the village, plus a pub and a lovely green to sit on if you need 5 minutes of rest. Sheep graze the village green so can be found wandering the roads wherever they please.

Hutton Beck winds its way straight through the village which really makes it look picture perfect.

Hutton-le-Hole is often considered one of the prettiest villages in the whole of North York Moors National Park, with easy access to the moorlands. The village itself has a good pub, and if you have time to stop on your MTB tour, don't miss its Ryedale Folk Museum, which is ace!

The tree in the rather unusual green in the middle of the village (with a stream running through it!) has a bench under it, and it's a lovely place to sit if you're taking a break here.

Hutton-le-Hole to Lastingham Lane

Highlight • Viewpoint

This lane, linking Hutton-le-Hole and Lastingham, is well worth a pedal along. It offers a nice way to appreciate what the North York Moors offers by bike without having to venture deep into the National Park or tackle the big climbs that come with it.

Just outside Hutton-le-Hole, the road passes over the wonderfully named Fairy Call Beck. Keep and eye out for sheep grazing at the roadside and enjoy the journey.
