ArtScience Museum

Highlight • Monument

As the name implies, the ArtScience Museum at the Marina Bay Sands® complex blends art and science in a successful way and tells fascinating stories. This stellar venue features regularly-changing, internationally-known traveling exhibitions realized in collaboration with organizations such as the American Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Institute and the world-famous furniture designer Herman Miller.
The museum not only breaks boundaries with its world-class exhibitions, but its design and architecture are also iconic. The museum building symbolizes the open hand of Singapore with 10 fingers. The tip of each "finger" allows natural light inside, so that the exhibits appear in the best light. The total of 21 galleries are spread over three floors and a total area of approximately 4,600 square meters.

Merlion Statue

Highlight • Monument

Singapore's national symbol - the Merlion - with the head of a lion and the body of a fish.

The body symbolizes Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village, then called Temasek, meaning "sea town" in Old Javanese.

The head stands for Singapore's original name Singapura, which is Malay and means "Lion City".

Cavenagh Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Cavenagh Bridge connects the colonial district with the business district. Its history dates back to 1868. Initially, the bridge was named Edinburgh Bridge to commemorate the visit to the Duke of Edinburgh. Later it was renamed in honor of Sir Lieutenant General William Orfeur Cavenagh, the last Governor of the Strait Settlement. It was the last major work of the Indian prisoners stationed in Singapore.
The steel structure of the bridge was shipped from Glasgow to Singapore. At the beginning, the bridge was also open to trams, but from 1909 most of the traffic was transferred to the Anderson Bridge, and today the Cavenagh Bridge is a pure pedestrian bridge. Before the bridge was built, it was only possible to get to the colonial district by boat or take a longer detour.
In 1987 it was restored and in 1990 the lighting was added. The Cavenagh Bridge is the oldest in Singapore and the only suspension bridge in the city. It was designed by John Turnball Thomson.
