The place is first mentioned in 1152 as Hoychenwaldt, when Pope Eugene III. Posa Monastery confirms ownership of the place. Around 1156 the construction of the fortification with the keep, the high tower, which was erected unconnected to the rest of the complex as a defensive tower, probably began. A castle is first mentioned in 1318. An older castle complex "the old castle" is said to have existed in Giebelroth until at least 1548 and was connected to the current castle by an underground passage.
