The Landhuis - Old Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The Mansion, together with the Church of Our Lady and Saint Leodegarius, dominates the spacious village square of Bornem.
The yellowish sandstone and architectural concept may mislead you and suggest a medieval origin, but this building is much more recent.
In the Landhuis you will find the tourist information office, the council chamber, the wedding hall and the municipal archives.

The surroundings, including the Sashuis, have been completely restored. This location has great value for the history of shipping. The lock from 1592 is the oldest existing and working lock.

The spacious parking lot is an ideal starting point for cycling or walking tours. Enjoy your discovery of Klein Brabant.

Temse Scheldt Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Scheldt Bridge near Temse is an important link in the region and is part of the Temse skyline.
The bridges connect landscapes and people.
Trains, cars, cyclists and walkers make daily use of this beautiful building designed by Gustave Eiffel. At 374 meters, the Scheldt Bridge is the longest bridge over water in Belgium and is also the last bridge over the Scheldt, downstream, towards the sea.
The first bridge was designed by Eifel and was completed in 1870.
She served in the railway connection between Mechelen and Terneuzen.
Because there were no cars or bicycles driving around at that time, it was only accessible to railway traffic and pedestrians.
With a length of 343 m (in 1870), it was immediately the longest bridge in Belgium.
During the First World War, the bridge suffered serious damage.
She was restored. Because she was and still is an important connection.
In 1940, however, it was blown up by French and Belgian engineers for strategic reasons.
After the war, the construction of a new bridge was given priority. The first pile was placed on June 2, 1949.
The solemn inauguration by King Baudouin followed on 19 December 1955.
The current bridge is 365 meters long.
In April 1994 the movable part was replaced by a new roller bascule bridge; the solemn reopening of the bridge took place on April 29, 1994.
On the side of Temse are two monumental statues by Karel Aubroeck: The Scheldt and The Waves. These were placed in 1958 and 1964.
Enjoy this horizontal work of art while pedaling or walking…

The 1955 bridge caused a lot of traffic jams, a problem that has largely been solved since 2009 by building a second bridge parallel to it. However, the current bridge complex remains a busy traffic junction, and the bridge largely determines the skyline of the Scheldt municipality of Temse.
As a cyclist you can safely cross the bridge or cross the N16 under the bridge.

Buitenland hamlet

Highlight • Settlement

Not far from home and yet experience a foreign feeling.
Nice special houses and only one street in Buitenland create a cozy atmosphere.
On sunny days it can be quite busy here. Parking is possible at the dike. Please note, parking spaces are limited. If all places are occupied, you can continue to the Mobilhome parking a little further away.

Kleine Kragewiel

Highlight • Lake

The Kleine Kragewiel, which is located just behind the dike, was created during a dike breach in 1552. A persistent storm made a breach in the Spierenbroek. This breach flooded the underlying polders from Branst to Eikevliet. For example, you can still find several 'wheels' in the landscape of Bornem.
According to legend, the storm died down after the procession with a statue of the Virgin Mary and the breach could only be closed after 5 years. The rising water had free play in the landscape all those years. The large water features 'fish ponds' in the spacious surroundings of Bornem are still silent witnesses of dike breaks.
Perhaps that's why the towpath attracts so many 'cycling' tourists…
At the Kleine Kragewiel there is a picnic bench that invites you to linger.
Swimming is prohibited. Enjoy life on and around the water.
