John Muir Country Park Beach and Pine Forest

Highlight • Trail

The John Muir Country Park is an area of forestry and beach maintained to promote the natural habitats and nature tourism. The area is home to over 400 species of plant as well as lots of important insect, butterfly and bird species. You can walk around the edge of the country park or follow one of the inland trails through the woods. Look out for the remains of the trenches and firing range left over from training and defence during the world wars.

Hedderwick Hill Plantation

Highlight • Historical Site

Now a forestry plantation that grows right up to the beach and alongside the John Muir Country Park. This area was used extensively for military training and defence during the 1st and 2nd world wars. There is evidence of trench systems and firing ranges around the edge of the woodland. Later the area was a gold course, now it's a wonderful area for a quiet walk. Watch out for the deer.

Phantassie Doocot

Highlight • Structure

Phantassie Doocot was probably built in the 1500s. It shares a number of features of the fairly common "beehive" shaped Scottish doocot, but is unusually cut off at the top to form a south facing slope through which the birds could access the nest boxes within. The Phantassie Doocot is named after the Phantassie estate on which it stands, perhaps best known as the birthplace in 1761 of the engineer John Rennie. Preston Mill

Highlight • Structure

Preston Mill has worked since the 16th century but the present mill building dates to the 18th century. The mill continued to be used to grind oatmeal commercially until 1959. Today the water wheel still turns, and the mill is open to visitors.
The weir on the river Tyne was used to control the water levels and maintain a good supply of water to the mill. It's a lovely place to stop on a walk with a convenient bench to sit and watch the river from.
