Camaldolese Monastery in Wigry

The Camaldolese Order (a Benedictine monastic order of pontifical right founded by Saint Romuald of Ravenna in 1012) was responsible for the creation of this monastery on the island of Wigry. This congregation settled here in 1668.

After the Third Partition of Poland in 1796, the Prussian authorities confiscated the Camaldolese estates, and in 1800, the monks were expelled from Wigry. The buildings subsequently suffered extensive damage, particularly during World War II. It was only after the conflict that reconstruction of the monastery began. In 1999, the Diocese of Wigry hosted Pope John Paul II. A small museum is dedicated to him.

The Kamionka River is a picturesque watercourse in Wigry National Park, originating near the village of Szwajcaria north of Suwałki. It flows through lakes Dąbrówka, Krzywe, Zielone, and Koleśne, finally emptying into Lake Pierty.

In its upper reaches, it is known as "Szwajcaria" (Switzerland) and is characterized by a swift current and a deep, steep-sided ravine. The Kamionka River is a habitat for beavers, who create dams and lodges, and is also home to fish such as brown trout.

Thanks to its clear waters and abundant aquatic vegetation, the river provides a haven for numerous animal species, including otters. It is an excellent place for leisurely bike rides and observing nature in its natural state.
