Highlight • Viewpoint

A beautiful village and spectacular setting. Go across the train tracks (away from the village) for an amazing view of Pen-y-ghent from there in the company of the sheep!

Highlight • Trail

As you begin your ascent towards Pen-y-ghent here, near the striking Brackenbottom Scar, the views are extraordinary. Worth stopping to admire, and if you happen to descent from the peak, then obviously be sure to turn back!

4.42 km

It's steep and rocky, but exhilarating and all easily manageable. The standard three peaks route ascends this way, so if you plan on descending here on a weekend, it's likely that you will be against the flow of a lot of traffic. Save it for a quieter mid-week if you can

Pen-y-Ghent

Highlight • Summit

For those tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks in the traditional counterclockwise direction, Pen-y-Ghent is the first summit you reach. At 2,277 feet (694 m), it's the smallest of the three but boasts incredible views of the golden landscape. With decent paths and a few scrambles to boot, it's the perfect warm-up for what's to come.

Hull Pot

Highlight • Canyon

Hull Pot, on the western side of Pen-y-Ghent, is a collapsed cavern, and an impressive hole measuring 91m (300ft) long by 18m (60ft) deep.

In the late 18th century, in a guidebook published, it was called 'a Hulpit', and the author stated that it "would have appeared like the inside of an enormous old Gothic castle, the high ruinous walls of which were left standing after the roof was fallen in".

April 3, 2022,Pen-Y-Ghent, Plover Hill and Hull Pot with the Sportsshoes Crew
What a fabulous day out with the @sportsshoes crew, hiking on my home turf in the glorious Yorkshire Dales 🙌⛰
Pen-y-ghent, Plover Hill and Hull Pot were all on today’s menu, followed by a memorable visit to Fawlty Towers AKA. The Golden Lion at Horton-In-Ribblesdale - clear winners of the ‘Worst Pub Customer Service’ category in the history of the …
What a day out with the team and their families. Great walk up and over Pen-Y-Ghent lead by Ben Mounsey. An even better piece of comic entertainment by guys at The Golden Lion in Horton-in-ribblesdale trying to prepare and get out the meals. Swear the guy had just watched faulty towers. Made a perfect end to the day.
Amazingly good conditions for hiking. The clouds were creating some great atmospheric conditions. Superb views towards Fountains Fell and Ingleborough. A welcome festive walk.
What an amazing experience.
Being lucky to have a lovely group to walk this distance with.
Definitely quite some hard parts, but absolute possible to do and even with dog. 🐶
Getting on top of Pen-y-ghent gets rewarded with an amazing view over the Dales. 🌄🏞️
