From 1819, the Lancaster Canal ran all the way to Kendal, bringing prosperity to the region. Coal was transported into the town, while limestone, slate and locally manufactured goods were exported.

However, the coming of the railways in the mid 19th century meant that the canal began to decline. After the Second World War, this once important artery was no longer needed and it became an ideal site for landfill. Today, you can still walk along the course of the old canal. The trail links nicely with a riverside stroll along the Kent.

Sedgwick Aqueduct and Village

Highlight • Historical Site

There is an old aqueduct in Sedgwick, which the Lancaster Canal Trail takes you through. If you wish to take the time to explore, the residents of Sedgwick have very helpfully put together a selection of walks and information about the village. This can be found at the bottom of the steps of the aqueduct (bridge) or below

Sedgwick House

Highlight • Historical Site

Sedgwick House was designed by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, and was one of the earliest commissions of the partnership. It was built in 1868 for William Henry Wakefield, who owned a local gunpowder factory. The family moved out of the house shortly before World War II, and it was then used by Lancashire County Council as a school for children with special needs. The school closed in 1987, and the building has since been converted into residential accommodation. The house is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It was designed and turned into apartments and a separate family living space by graphic and interior designer Malcolme Frank Thorburn.
The grounds are used by the local cricket club.

River Kent Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

Beautiful spot for a dip or a paddle. Years of water flowing here has carved a river through into the rocky landscape, leaving a perfect spot for paddling/soaking tired feet! Not deep enough for swimming. Off the path.

Dorothy's Seat

Highlight • Viewpoint

A very pleasant spot to take a break from your walk. There is some white water just downriver from the seat which provides a nice acoustic background and a lovely view upriver.
