View of Wast Water

Highlight • Lake

The views at the top of Scafell Pike are worth the sacrifice of climbing this mountain.

Illgill Head

Highlight • Viewpoint

Illgill Head is a Wainwright Fell that I've hiked 3 times. Once in beautiful sunshine, once in the dark and most recently in a glorious summer haze. It never disappoints. The walk between Illgill Head and Whin Rigg offers wonderful views down to Wast Water, and I particularly love the view to Great Gable, Kirk Fell and Yewbarrow from here. A great 609m mountain!

The view from the smaller ridge surrounding Wast water can be just as impressive.

Greendale Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The little stone bridge in Greendale crosses the Greendale Gill above Wast Water.

This is also the finish point for the Joss Naylor Challenge. This route starts at Pooley Bridge and runs 48 miles (77 km) across the fells to here.

Seatallan summit

Highlight • Natural Monument

Seatallan is a 2,270-foot (692 m) Wainwright in the Lake District National Park. On the summit plateau you'll find a trig pillar and a large cairn but neither of these mark the Wainwright summit, this point is beside a smaller cairn just a little further to the north west. A great walk that takes in Seatallan is the Greendale Round, which includes neighbouring Wainwrights Buckbarrow and Middle Fell.

Pillar Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

This broad, flat summit is wonderfully situated above the increasingly wild valley of Ennerdale to the north and Mosedale, the remote offshoot of Wasdale, to the south. As such the scenery is nothing short of spectacular, including the monolithic seen-but-not-touched Pillar Rock, whose own compact summit is the realm of steely sinewed climbers only.
