Hospital Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Since the Middle Ages, the civic hospital foundation, to which the church still belongs today, has cared for the poor, the elderly and the sick in the city. To ensure that spiritual life was not neglected, a church was also built. In return for the free care, the residents had to pray for the city during daily services. The previous buildings were dedicated to the holy benefactor Elisabeth of Thuringia. When the church fell into disrepair in the mid-18th century, the Margraves had a magnificent new building built in the Rococo style, created by the same architects and artists as the castle church.

Franz Liszt Museum Bayreuth

Highlight • Historical Site

In 1886, Franz Liszt traveled to Bayreuth to attend the festival, which was directed by his daughter Cosima, Richard Wagner's widow. At the time of the trip, Liszt was already seriously ill. He died on July 31, 1886, a few days after his arrival, at the age of 74 from the effects of pneumonia. Liszt was buried in the Bayreuth city cemetery. The house where he died in Untere Siegfriedstrasse (today: Wahnfriedstrasse 9) opposite the Villa Wahnfried has housed the Franz Liszt Museum since 1993.

Hofgarten Bayreuth

Highlight • Natural

After the construction of the New Palace, the park, which had been in use since 1580, received an L-shaped ornamental canal with two islands as its new main axis. The smaller island, located in the axis of the longer leg, is now known as "Swan Island." The Greek sea nymph Thetis sits enthroned at its center.

The writer and poet Jean Paul (1763 to 1825), who came from Wunsiedel, moved to Bayreuth with his wife and two children in 1804. He spent the last years of his life here, withdrawn and plagued by illness. In 1823, Jean Paul contracted cataracts and gradually went blind. In 1825, he also developed dropsy, from which he died on November 14th. He is buried in the city cemetery in Bayreuth. In 1841, King Ludwig I dedicated his monument in Friedrichstrasse, not far from Jean Paul's last home.
