The 14 limekilns at Charlestown were built out of sandstone in the 18th century and became the largest in Scotland. Opposite the kilns is a harbour specifically built to allow ships to get as close as possible to the kilns, after which they would carry the quicklime and coal to the rest of the country and beyond; playing an important role in the industrialisation process.

Limekilns is a pretty little village on the Fife coastline and a tranquil place to sit and watch the world go by. Historically and perhaps obviously, the hills behind were extensively mined for limestone and the area has limekilns in abundance.

The harbour here is particularly picturesque and is markedly different depending on the tides.
