The transitional moor between Rabenstein and Bodenmais, with its moor edge forests and the historic quartz quarry with tunnels, was placed under nature protection in 1993 with an area of 10 hectares. The break has interesting rocks accompanying the quartz. Educational boards convey the history and mineralogy of this former quartz mining site. The earlier quartz mining had formed an underground lake. In the last century a complete horse and cart collapsed and sank here. Today's only entrance into the depths is closed with a grille for safety reasons. In addition to the bog forest, bogberry, rosemary heather or bilberry and peat moss bulbs characterize the vegetation. The old drainage ditches have now been filled in with the help of THW and the moor has been largely renatured. The tunnel is now used by bats as winter quarters. The Bavarian Forest Nature Park, designed by Susanne Blenk, created an accompanying booklet for the quartz quarry in the "Kiesau" nature reserve
