Denwick Bridge

Highlight • Monument

Denwick Bridge, located northwest of Alnwick, was constructed in 1766 by the first Duke of Northumberland. One side of the bridge features a series of connected crescents, which symbolize the Percy family. This bridge, however, was never intended for the traffic we see today, leading to occasional repairs. In 1966, a bus incident caused damage to the coping and a section of the wall.

Originally built in the 18th century for the first Duke of Northumberland, the bridge was widened in 1924 with the addition of a concrete arch. It spans 56 feet and stands 18 feet tall. Pedestrian refuges are available on one side, and decorative balustrades with linked Percy crescents adorn the western parapet. The bridge holds a Grade 1 listing.

Nearby, there are weirs above and below the bridge, and a gate at the northwest end grants access to a footpath through the Pastures, an area of grassland north of the river. Woodland lies to the east.

Great views of Alnwick Castle with the River Aln in. This field sometimes has cows in so if you have a dog take extra care

Stone Weir Waterfall

Highlight • Monument

This path wasn't a highlight for me, but if you want to walk around the city once, it's probably the best.

Otherwise, there are much nicer walks in the area!

If, like us, you're too stingy to pay the castle entrance fee, there are at least some good views from here.

You share the path with the cows (watch out for the cow dung), and there are no benches or anything else.
