Yellow-bellied toad pond

Highlight • Natural

The turmoil in the small puddle by the wayside is not toads, but yellow-bellied toads. This becomes clear when you can catch a glimpse of its underside: Here it has a pattern of bright yellow and black spots. But please do not disturb the animals, they are strictly protected. You can take a look at the warning pattern on the yellow-bellied toad in the following section.

Deadwood in the forest

Highlight • Forest

The large, impressive things along the narrow path, such as the broken beech trunk, usually catch the eye immediately. But watch out for the little forest dwellers: numerous Roman snails cavort on the paths in summer. The "dead wood" water reservoir benefits the protected snail species, as it ensures sufficient moisture in the forest even in dry times.

With the trees along the way, not only the crowns seem to be full of green leaves, but also whole tree trunks. The little "climbing Max" who uses the trees as a climbing aid to make his way to the sun is called ivy.

Celtic Cult Site on Stätteberg

Highlight • Historical Site

A Celtic cult center once enthroned within a large rampart high up on the Stätteberg.
The Institute for Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archeology and Provincial Roman Archeology of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich carries out archaeological excavations here.

In the ramparts there was a burnt offering place on a flat limestone foundation, which was covered by a layer of ash with traces of fire, a few hundredweight of burned animal bones and an enormous mass of shards, inside a bronze dagger (sacrificial knife?).

After Manching, this is the second largest facility of its kind in the region.

The main wall consisted of a 3 m thick dry stone wall with wooden stiffeners and parapets.

Please note the barriers and signs.

Felsenspitz

Highlight • Natural Monument

The foothills of the Jura south of the Danube, which extend furthest to the west, descend here in an approx. 30 m high rock face to the Danube and to the small pair.
The Danube forced a breakthrough here at Unterhausen / Stepperg.
In the 19th century, parts of the Jura reef were blown away to extract material for fortifying the Danube.
Not far from the Felsenspitz, the Kleine Paar unites with the Friedberger Ach, which finally flows into the Danube after a few hundred meters.

The slope and gorge forest, where the Friedberger Ach first flows into the Kleine Paar and then into the Danube. A beautiful place, a wild river landscape with high cliffs and dense deciduous forest.
