Middle Peak Quarry

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

Quarrying first began here in the 1790s predominantly as a source of fluxing stone for the Midlands' iron and steel works, then latterly as a major aggregates producer. The site closed in 1992, although there are still intermittent workings of the area. Ownership of Middle Peak involved up to as many as forty separate landholdings.

StarDisc, Stoney Wood

Highlight • Monument

Check out the Stardisc at the top of Stoney Wood, where there is also some lovely views of the surrounding area and the Middle Peak Quarry. Stoney Wood itself contains some interesting natural art so it is worth having a stroll through the park or adding it to your hike route. Be aware that it is hilly! :)

Staney Vough Gate, Stoney Wood

Highlight • Forest

Stoney Wood is Wirksworth’s Millennium woodland planted in the area recovered from Stonecroft Quarry. The land on which the wood is planted was donated by Tarmac Ltd to Wirksworth Town Council. The original planting was started by Tarmac but later sections were planted by local adults and children in a project inspired by the Foret Giorno woodland near Wirksworth’s twin town of Die in France. In recent years further improvements have taken place and the wood is a regular location for events in the town.

The wood is also home to various artworks and oddities.

A display of various styles of dry stone walls from around the UK. Sounds exceptionally boring but is actually quite interesting!
Situated within the National Stone Centre which is worth a visit and a wander around (free). The cafe at the Stone Centre is also recommended (especially for scones).

National Stone Centre

Highlight • Climb

Old limestone quarries that have been opened to explain how the area used to be the shoreline. Interesting details to read and lots of old, overgrown quarries to explore. Some of the cliff faces are used by climbers and there are occasional caves and a lot of industrial heritage.
The Centre is free to visit and includes a cafe which is recommended.
With all the cliff edges, be careful, particularly with children.
The information centre also has a gem panning pond (chargeable) suitable for younger children.
