In-wall stairs built for pedestrians to use to climb down on to the canal below, these steps are marked with a bridle path sign just nestled to the side of the Roman bridge that sits over the canal.

Llangattock Village and Canal

Highlight • Cycleway

The village of Llangattock is an excellent base for exploring the Brecon Beacons National Park. There are plenty of accommodation options and places to eat and drink in the village, while Crickhowell's amenities are just a short walk across the bridge.

With the imposing gritstone plateau of Mynydd Llangatwg and the limestone quarries and cave systems of the Llangattock Escarpment to the south and Pen Cerrig-calch and the Neolithic interest of Table Mountain to the north, there's plenty of superb hiking on the village's doorstep.

Meanwhile, a short drive to the west are the Central Beacons, crowned by Pen y Fan, the highest British peak south of Snowdonia.

River Usk

Highlight • River

The River Usk rises on the northern slopes of the Black Mountain (y Mynydd Du), Wales, in the westernmost part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Initially forming the boundary between Carmarthenshire and Powys, it flows north into Usk Reservoir, then east by Sennybridge to Brecon before turning southeast to flow by Talybont-on-Usk, Crickhowell and Abergavenny after which it takes a more southerly course.

Beyond the eponymous town of Usk it passes the Roman legionary fortress of Caerleon to flow through the heart of the city of Newport and into the Severn estuary at Uskmouth beyond Newport at Newport Wetlands. The river is about 125 km (78 mi) long.

The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal follows the Usk for most of the length of the canal.
