Moreton-in-Marsh — Market town

Highlight • Settlement

A thriving market town in the Cotswolds, Moreton-in-Marsh still holds a market every Tuesday. The town has been hosting travellers for at least 1,700 years and many inns, pubs and hotels still welcome visitors today. Built from typical golden Cotswold stone, the town has a pretty 18th century high street and many historic buildings. You can even visit a pub where King Charles I sheltered during the English Civil war – the White Hart. They have a copy of his unpaid bill in the entrance lobby.

Other famous visitors to the town include J. R. R. Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings trilogies. The Bell Inn supposedly inspired Middle Earth's pub the Prancing Pony.

Adlestrop Park and House

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Protected by Historic England, Adlestrop House and Park are a fine example of a Cotswold manor house and gardens. Author Jane Austen once visited the parklands, which became her inspiration and setting for her novel, Mansfield Park. The parklands are open to the public and there is a good single track for cyclists. Burford Village

Highlight • Historical Site

Sometimes known as the Gateway to the Cotswolds this is one of the prettiest villages in England. Worth looking inside the church for some interesting civil war history. I’d recommend stopping at Huffkins bakery for one of their Chelsea buns as they are legendary, they also have some space around the back for bikes.

Windrush and Sherborne Brook

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

Some stunning villages built from honeyed Cotswold stone. Sherborne Park Estate is managed by the National Trust estate, on organic principles and hosted of Springwatch / Autumnwatch in 2017/18.

Bourton-on-the-Water village

Highlight • Viewpoint

An archetypal Cotswold village, Bourton-on-the-Water's mix of pretty cottages and honey-coloured brick houses give it an undeniable charm. Delightful arched bridges span the River Windrush, the small river responsible for giving Bourton its 'Venice of the Cotswolds' tag.

The ancient Roman road, the Fosse Way, travels through the village and it is also that start point for the Oxfordshire Way long-distance trail to Henley-on-Thames.

Highlight • Settlement

Nice village to start any local walks, but beware it gets very busy.

This bridleway just outside Stow-on-the-Wold provides a perfect spot for a scenic forested ride, offering a peaceful escape from the town's usual hustle.
