Wilhelmina Park, Venlo

Highlight • Natural

The Wilhelmina Park is a park on the northwest side of the center of the Dutch city of Venlo.

The park was created after 1870, when the fortifications were demolished. Immediately after the demolition, urban planner Frits van Gendt designed a new district on this side of the city center, where Fort Ginkel had previously stood.

Part of the Van Gendt Plan was a villa park. Both architect Johannes Kayser and landscape architect L.R. Rosseels from Leuven were involved in the plan in 1888. Kayser for the villas and Rosseels for the park. Both villas and park had to have an appearance based on Victorian architecture.

Eventually, several villas were built in the villa park (as it was then called) with names such as: Goltzius (1893), Puteanus (1893), Sophia (1897), Wilhelmina (1898) and Hermine (1900). Eleven more single and two double villas were built between 1909 and 1933. The villa park was only then given the name Wilhelmina Park.

There is a monumental fountain in the keyhole-shaped park pond. This fountain dates from 1921 and was designed by Michel de Klerk in the style of the Amsterdam School. Before that, there was a rock fountain dating from 1892. The fountain is dedicated to the then mayor Hermanus van Rijn, with the text "To mayor Van Rijn, 1921, by the Venlosche Burgerij". The fountain also features statues of Hildo Krop.

If you are interested in architecture or just love colorful houses, you should take a look at the "Metropole complex" on the corner of Straelseweg and Noord-Binnensingel. There are several beautiful mansions in Art Nouveau style - also known to us as Art Nouveau - one after the other. The metropolis complex takes its name from the Café Metropole of the same name, which was located here until 1912. Over time, the buildings deteriorated more and more - until 1993 a housing association bought the houses and extensively restored them.
