South Downs Light Railway

Highlight • Structure

The South Downs Light Railway is housed in Pulborough Garden Centre and its miniature trains are actually powered by a coal burning steam engine. It's run by volunteers although don't let that make you think there's not much to see – there are often renovations going on with additions to the railway and plenty for rail enthusiasts and children to enjoy.

The White Hart Pub

The White Hart is located by the River Arun next to the Stopham Bridge. There's a terrace outside next to the river as well as comfortable seating inside.

Stopham Bridge

A Grade I-listed structure, Stopham Bridge spans the River Arun in Sussex and it quite something to see. It's thought to have been built in the 1420s although once sported a drawbridge after a section was destroyed during the civil war.

To protect it, a new bridge was built in the 80s for traffic. You can still walk and cycle over the original bridge.

Fittleworth Wood

Fittleworth Wood has a certain amount of mystique. Legend tells of the Hissing Worm of Fittleworth, living in the trees and spraying venom at passers-by. The 19th-century folklorist Charlotte Latham resided here and wrote many fables and tales.

The 'wood magic' of Fittleworth Wood is said by some to have been the inspiration for Elgar's new Violin Sonata. There's also said to be a little, one-legged wooden bear loose amongst the trees. Visitors bring the cub gifts and he is often garbed in seasonal wear come the festive season.
