The monument commemorates the launching of the MS Sanok general cargo ship in 1966.

The ship was 99.5 m long, had a deadweight tonnage of 3,015 DWT, served in the years 1966-1987 and was owned by Polskie Linie Oceaniczne.

The monument with anchors is a very exotic souvenir in Sanok, considering that Sanok is not a seaside city, it does not even have a navigable connection to the sea, like Gliwice has (via the Gliwice Canal and the Oder), where to emphasize this connection and the maritime nature of the city stands the Neptune monument*. 😀

Sanok, located in the remote, south-eastern corner of Poland, is one of the cities located farthest from the Baltic coast. By road from Sanok to the nearest sea coast (Stegna commune) is about 750 km, and to the Black Sea and Adriatic even further.

Technical data of the ship based on Wikipedia.

Highlight • Monument

The mural is on the left side of ul. 3 Maja, also known as the promenade, walking towards the Market Square, not far in front of the Švejk bench. Painted on a tin gate separating the street from a narrow yard.

Walking along the Sanok promenade towards the Market Square, you should turn right at the Švejk bench. Down stairs you can reach ul. Podgórze, the route is not suitable for bicycles.

Sanok History Murals on Podgórze

Highlight • Monument

It is a real treat for lovers of murals - such an accumulation in one easily accessible place. The artist used retaining walls supporting the escarpment on which the old town of Sanok is located. There is a parking lot right next to it, so the attraction is also easily accessible to tourists by car.
Retaining walls are needed here and on both sides because the hill is not rocky but clay and tends to slide. This was experienced by the nearby Franciscan monastery, where cracks in the structure of the historic church were observed. For the same reason, it was decided to "impregnate" the market square in Sanok (next to which the monastery is located), from where old trees were removed and paved with red cubes, which led some people to call it Red Square.
