Legnano Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Visconti Castle of Legnano, also known as the Castle of San Giorgio, is a historic medieval fortification located on a natural island created by a meander of the Olona River.

Originally built by the Torriani family in the 13th century, and later the residence of the powerful Visconti family, the castle is now owned by the Municipality of Legnano after being converted into a farm in the 18th century.

In addition to being a fascinating example of fortified architecture, the Visconti Castle is an important cultural center of the city. It houses the College of Captains and Contrade and serves as an exhibition venue, housing works of art such as the famous triptych of the Battle of Legnano by the painter Gaetano Previati and sculptures by Ugo Riva. The entire complex is surrounded by the picturesque Castle Park, a much-loved green oasis.
