Oratory of St. Ambrose of Capronno

Highlight • Religious Site

The Chapel of Sant'Ambrogio is located a few meters from the road that leads from Capronno to Cadrezzate and Lentate.
The small oratory has a distinct plan in two rooms separated by an entrance with a round arch: the small apse area and the portico.
The back wall is decorated with a fresco in which a Sacred Conversation is represented: the crucified Christ is placed in the centre, on the left the Madonna enthroned with Child and on the right Saint Ambrose with a whip and pastoral ferula.
The work by an unknown author can be dated between 1400 and 1600. The figure of Sant'Ambrogio, of fine workmanship, presents many similarities with the image of the Saint present in the Abbey of San Donato, in Sesto Calende.
The altar was built using a block of Angera stone with an inscription from the Roman era, with the writing CRETAE, arranged upside down. During the restoration of the Chapel carried out in 1993 the block was turned to its current position.
In the vicinity in the 1920s, some Lombard tombs were discovered which have unfortunately been lost.
