Whiteleaf Cross

Highlight • Monument

Whiteleaf Cross is a striking hill carving on Whiteleaf Hill in Buckinghamshire. The carving, which reveals the underlying chalk, depicts a Christian cross sat on top of a triangular base, like the top of a church's gable. The exact origin of the carving is unclear, with the earliest reference dating back to 1742.

Whiteleaf Hill is an 11 hectares Local Nature Reserve. Very close from Princes Risborough, with fantastic view from up here of the town and beyond. It is managed by the Chiltern Society. There are five scheduled ancient monuments, including those from the Neolithic Age, and the Whiteleaf Cross, which is a chalk carving, potentially from the 18th century.

View from Whiteleaf Hill

Highlight • Viewpoint

Whiteleaf is within easy walking distance of the train station (you can get a train to Princes Risborough - walk a little, then get the train back from Monks Risborough) and has a beautiful viewpoint. It also looks very different depending on what time of year you visit! Definitely a place to go and sit and think. :)

View from the Grangelands and the Rifle Range

Highlight • Natural Monument

There is a phenomenal view to the north from here - long sweeping views of the forested hills and down towards Great Kimble and beyond. This is the stuff of poets live for!

By the way, do give the Granglelands and the Rifle Range information board a read for more information about this beautiful chalk grassland area. The place is teeming with life: including butterflies such as Brimstones, Common Blues and Marbled Whites to be spotted in the spring and summer months.

Pulpit Hill Nature Reserve

Highlight • Forest

The Pulpit Hill is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The interest lies in the high forest, open grassland and the fact that previously in history, the area had been cleared before going back to woodland.

In the woods, there are also remains of an ancient hill fort, worth looking at.

Lovely and easy paths to run on here - so all in all, no better place to be!
