St. Johannis Church with Twisted Steeple (Sandstedt)

Highlight • Religious Site

The church has had a leaning tower since the 17th century. “The leaning tower was not planned that way,” explains Karla Mombeck from Sandstedt, formerly director of the joint congregation and for a long time on the Sandstedt church council. But it can be determined from old invoices that are still in the archive that the church tower was only built within six months. "That was a proud achievement in 1611. And then the oak beams were probably not dried out quite as sufficiently and afterwards they dried themselves and thus pulled the tower at an angle." But by then the craftsmen were already paid and over the mountains.

So there was botched construction as early as the 17th century. Nowadays, says Karla Mombeck, the craftsmen would probably be sued. At that time the crooked church tower roof was accepted. Perhaps because of this, the Sandstedtern grew fond of their tower - which also leans slightly to the side because the church, as is customary in the march, was built on a terp that has sagged by about half a meter over the centuries.
