Krautkopfplatz – Jewish Memorial, Wachenheim/Zellertal

Highlight • Monument

To the left of the Wachenheim Cemetery and outside its walls, a memorial was erected in 2017 for the former Jewish residents of Wachenheim who were expelled from the area and murdered during the Nazi era.

This memorial was created "at the suggestion of Dr. David Kraft (born David Krautkopf), a former Wachenheim resident who fled to America with his family in 1938. [...] It was important to Dr. David Krautkopf to contribute to the costs of the memorial" or to donate it (see the inscription on the memorial).

The small green area containing the memorial was named after his former family name ("Krautkopfplatz").
"The former Jewish community of Wachenheim has a centuries-long and eventful history that ended with the Nazi reign of terror. The first Jewish citizen of Wachenheim was documented in 1534. By 1800, the community already numbered 47, and by 1831, there were 81. They primarily traded goods and livestock. Schmiedgasse had its own synagogue, as well as a schoolhouse and a ritual bath. Classic Jewish surnames in the Zellertal valley included Kehr, Fittler, Löb, Hausmann, and Krautkopf. In 1942, the last six Jewish citizens of Wachenheim [see names on the memorial] were deported and murdered, including two children aged three and four."

In place of this small green space with benches, "the house of the Jewish family [Hermann & Johannetta] Herz once stood, which was demolished after the war due to its dilapidated condition."

Since August 2024, a memorial plaque has stood here, depicting all nine houses "that were Jewish-owned before the Nazi era." (However, there are no memorial plaques or Stolpersteine at the individual houses.)

The QR code on this plaque links to a detailed brochure from which the above quotes and information are taken: blauesrathaus.de/juedisches-leben-bockenheim

On October 22, 1940, all Jewish residents of the Palatinate region were deported to Gurs (southern France). Eight Jewish men and women from Bockenheim were among them: two men and two women from Bockenheim were murdered in Auschwitz; all the others perished in Gurs or elsewhere.

House of the German Wine Route

Highlight • Monument

This is the counterpart to the German Wine Gate in Schweigen, which marks the southern end of the German Wine Route. The building, based on a Roman fort, spans the street. In the building there is, among other things, a restaurant, a tourist information office and a large parking lot on the other side of the street.

There are also two Kneipp pools on the premises, one for the arms and another for the feet, including detailed instructions. We divided it into "before eating" and "after eating" and were amazed by the lasting effect.

"The Mittelhof (Mittelbockenheim) was probably built in the 7th century as a royal administrative center for about 50 Frankish settlements between the Eis and Pfrimm valleys, below the Roman road from Strasbourg to Bingen to Cologne."

Today, all that remains of the former Merovingian royal court is a long dry-stone wall with a small stone gate.
