The Wixhou Mushroom

Highlight • Monument

Located in the woods of the Julienne, the Wixhou mushroom was erected around 1850 by Count FR-J de Mercy-Argenteau near the chapel and Château d'Argenteau. A small building with a recreational and ornamental vocation, it is a rare element of our heritage which offers walkers a place of rest or even a belvedere. The ornate cast iron barrel was produced by the Réquilé foundries in Liège. The zinc roof presents interesting frescoes under the roofs. In 2017, this factory underwent a major restoration.

Wixhou Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Wixhou is located at the top of the northeastern slope of the Julienne valley at an altitude of around 130 m. Located on the edge of the woods of the Domaine de la Julienne, the hermitage and chapel of Notre-Dame au Bois d'Argenteau were originally a modest oratory built in 1683 at the request of Count Louis-Antoine de Claris, Count of Clairmont and Argenteau. The transformations leading to the current construction began in 1849 at the initiative of Count François de Mercy-Argenteau. A pilgrimage takes place every September 8 for the feast of Our Lady of Wixhou.

Julienne Valley Ponds

Highlight • Lake

The ponds of the Vallée de la Julienne are located in the middle of a varied landscape of forests, grasslands and marshy areas, which makes it home to a rich biodiversity. The area is a paradise for those who love quiet bike rides along the water.

Julienne Ponds

Highlight • Lake

The Julienne is a Belgian stream flowing in the province of Liège, a tributary of the Meuse on the right bank.
It has its source in Retinne, then crosses the town of Saive, watering the foot of the old castle there. It passes in the bottom of Légipont, then under the E40 motorway and enters a small, partly wooded, rural valley; it forms the Julienne ponds before flowing into the Meuse at Argenteau.
The name evokes Sainte-Julienne de Cornillon, born in Retinne in 1192.

Argenteau

Highlight • Lake

Argenteau (in Walloon Åyetê) is a section of the Belgian municipality of Visé located in the Walloon Region in the province of Liège.
It was a municipality in its own right before the merger of municipalities in 1977. It has a hamlet: Wixhou.
Argenteau is located at the western end of the Herve plateau, between the Meuse valley and the wooded valley of the Julienne.

Erosion Gully with Stream

Highlight • Gorge

This stream of water, which is not really visible in this photo, reminded me of the Gerendalseweg near Scheulder, which looked like a wide flowing river after a heavy rain shower. The water flowed from the nearby fields down the Gerendalseweg. Judging by the gorge, the same thing must have happened here. Quite impressive.
