De Dries: 1 ha 32 are 30 ca in size, has been the property of the Sint-Pietersgilde for centuries, which is unique in Belgium. 28 members of the Guild of Saint Peter are the owners. The archers' guild still keeps its shootings there. The Dorpsdries was situated in front of the original Frankish court on the brook. The 'Mazeldries' (the square below) was protected as a monument because of its historical and folklore value, with the following words: "the dries of Mazenzele is a very well-preserved dries. In the shade of the trees there is a rural tranquility, where many artist finds his inspiration and where, according to annual tradition, the King's Shooting is held on Sinksendag."

Immortalized mortal

Highlight • Monument

Artist: Stijn Leemans

Immortalized Mortal
I am the wind that blows softly in your ears
The breeze that gently blows through your hair
The raindrops that stick to your eyelashes
that make you long for a beautiful day

So much more than dust and ashes, dear

I am the snowflake that kisses your lips and melts there on the spot
The poppy on the side of the field
The sun that caresses your skin dearly
The sandman that gives you a beautiful dream at night

So much more than dust and ashes, dear

I am the chirping bird on a branch in your hyacinth bush
The butterfly that frolic in your stomach
The flower that only smells for you
The smiling stranger who brightens your day in passing

So much more than dust and ashes, dear

I am the green leaf that begins to blush for you in the fall
The pussy that comes to caress your legs
She's softly hugging you
Still purrs when you want to get up unexpectedly

So much more than dust and ashes, dear

I am the beautiful setting sun
The champagne bubbles that play on your tongue
The steel blue sky with its beautiful fluffy clouds
The one who made your blood swirl with passion

I AM
I WAS
So much more than dust and ashes, dear

Sint-Rochus Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Opwijk's oldest votive chapel (1770) features a characteristic arrangement of lime trees at a crossroads.
This semi-rural chapel in the Droeshout neighborhood is shaded by three lime trees (Tilia platyphyllos) and is located at the intersection of Mazelstraat and 't Kintstraat, near the now-defunct farm of the influential and wealthy 't Kint family, known in Opwijk since 1513. According to a memorial stone inside, a certain Joh. Josina 't Kint (1696-1793) commissioned the construction of this chapel in 1770 in response to a plague epidemic that occurred between 1667 and 1669.
