Royal Palace

Highlight • Historical Site

The Royal Palace is the official residence of the Belgian King. Located in the heart of the city, the palace is a significant symbol of the Belgian monarchy and national identity. The palace not only serves as the official residence of the Belgian King and as a venue for royal ceremonies, receptions, and events, but is also open to visitors during the summer.

Saint Jacques-sur-Coudenberg Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Prince Charles of Lorraine, governor of the Austrian Netherlands, was responsible for the construction of the present Koningsplein and the accompanying church. The church is the joint showpiece of the architects Guimard and Montoyer. It was built between 1776 and 1787.

The Sint-Jacob-op-de-Koudenberg church is preceded by an imposing Greco-Roman colonnade with six Corinthian columns topped by a triangular pediment.

In the grandiose interior we find a rare type of barrel vault : despite the floral decorations, the designers adhered to a strict, classic style.

On July 21, 1831, Leopold I took the oath as the first king of Belgium on the square at the Sint-Jacobskerk. A memorial plaque bears witness to this historic event.
This is also the church of the royal family : King Leopold II, King Albert I, King Leopold III, King Baudouin, King Albert II, Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte of Luxembourg, King Philippe and Princess Astrid were all baptized here. The funeral ceremonies of King Leopold III and Prince Charles (regent of Belgium 1944-1951) also took place here.

Finally, the St-Jacob-op-de-Koudenberg Church is also the cathedral of the 'Diocese at the Armed Forces' (the army diocese).

Opposite the Zavel church lies the Kleine Zavel square, one of the architectural gems of Brussels city center. In this neo-Renaissance style garden, there is also a group of sculptures by the greatest Belgian artists of the nineteenth century.

In the 1880s, the mayor of Brussels, Charles Buls, proposed to embellish the district and transform the square into a seductively beautiful garden, which was opened to the public in 1890.

The symmetrical flowerbeds lead to a raised fountain, whose circular water basin is dominated by the sculpture of the counts of Egmont and Hoorn. Behind it, two arched staircases lead to the Egmont Palace.

The plantings have a symbolic function: the nine beds with pruned boxwood that frame the lawn represent the nine provinces that Belgium counted at the time. Another flowerbed in the shape of a crown symbolizes Belgium.

Around the Kleine Zavel runs a very beautiful wrought-iron fence, consisting of panels with varied motifs and columns.

The trees in the Cambre forest are mainly deciduous, with a mix of oaks, beeches and maples, which give the forest a different look in all seasons. In spring and summer, the paths are covered with a carpet of green, while in autumn the woods transform into a palette of warm colours. Even in winter, the forest has its charm, with quiet, misty paths that invite you to take a peaceful walk.
