Paul Selbach Ruh (Stone Table)

Highlight • Structure

Beautiful resting place (from 1953) with a round stone table, 3 resting benches, and a memorial stone. The hamlet of Elmstein-Schwabenbach is within sight.
Paul Selbach, after whom this resting place is named, was the very first chairman of the Ludwigshafen local group of the association „Die Naturfreunde“, founded in 1910.

You should know that the international association „Die Naturfreunde“ was founded in Vienna in 1895 as an „international organization of the working class“. The Ludwigshafen local group set itself the most important goal of establishing a holiday home in the Pfälzerwald. „It was not intended to be a forest tavern, but a place for those seeking recreation.“
After World War I, a residential building "in an excellently good location" was purchased in the Elmstein district of Harzofen (Appenthal), which was converted and extended by a new building. Paul Selbach, among others, was primarily responsible for the implementation of this major project as chairman of the Ludwigshafen Naturfreunde.

Source (partially quoted verbatim) and further information on the eventful history of the Naturfreundehaus Elmstein can be found in the Elmstein local history publication „Geschichte und Geschichten unserer Heimat“ (Issue 5; Dec. 2001).

Old Tower, Appenthal

Highlight • Monument

The "Old Tower" in Appenthal belonged to a respectable
Sandstone church built in the late 15th century
became. After the church as early as the 16th century
had fallen into disrepair, the red sandstones were used for building houses
reused. However, the walls of the tower were closed
robust in order to be able to remove them as well. Hence he is
today still an important cultural asset of the Elmstein Valley.
