Highlight • Castle

In the 12th century, the Bishop of Freising pushed through the establishment of his own parish in Hollenburg and a successor had his castle built west of the village in the 13th century. The castle complex was expanded under Bishop Berthold von Wehingen (1381–1410); the castle with the name Bertholdstein is named after him. Over the centuries, acts of war repeatedly caused destruction. After the Swedes in 1645/46 and the Turks in 1683, the plague broke out, the complex was largely destroyed by fire in 1698, and the complex has been in ruins since then.
