The trail crosses the Mediterranean - Adriatic Continental Divide at this point. The Continental Divide runs down this ridge and across Simplon Pass from here. Looking up, the Divide runs over the peaks of Hubschhorn and Breithorn. Northeast of this point, the water flows naturally to the Mediterranean through the Rhone drainage basin. To the Southwest, the water flows to the Adriatic and the Po drainage basin. The stream along the trail here is actually a canal, built with a system of small locks and channels, so that it flows over the pass where the Continental Divide is located.
