Geest Bridge

The history of the Geestbrug goes back to 1350 when the first bridge over the recently dug Haagvliet was opened; this was to restore the existing road over the beach wall from Voorburg to Rijswijk, which was now intersected by the Trekvliet or Haagvliet. In 1430 the bridge was closed and later demolished because it was in a bad condition and not well maintained. The Delfland Water Board decided in 1447 to build a new permanent stone bridge. In 1892 the old fixed bridge was replaced by a double drawbridge. In 1933 the current bascule bridge was opened as a connection between the Geestbrugweg in Rijswijk and the Prinses Mariannelaan in Voorburg. This also made it possible to extend the tram line that had already run to the Cromvlietkade from 1927 to Voorburg station.
The Geestbrug was the oldest toll bridge in the area.
